What's New - May 2007AnnouncementsOur all day Hands Across the Sea Symposium, is all set for Thursday 21 June, the day after the Rotary Convention in Salt Lake City. Past RI President Cliff Dochterman will open the meeting with the keynote speech. In 1997 Cliff was the creator of the WCSRN Concept when he was Chair of the The Rotary Foundation Trustees. For those of you that have advised us you will attend, we will be sending you a Final Agenda and the List of the Pre-registered attendees in a couple of weeks. Please bring these items with you to facilitate networking. If you do not receive these items in a couple of weeks but plan to attend, please send us a message so we can add you to our attendee list. After the Symposium, we will try to send a summary of the meeting to those of you who attend and those who told us they wanted to, but couldn't schedule it into their calendar. I am stepping down as Chair of the HANDS Executive and Operations Committees immediately after the HANDS Symposium in Salt Lake City. HANDS, with its predecessor, the World Community Service Resource Network (WCSRN) exists since the WCSRN was created by the RI Board as a Pilot Project in 1997. The Web Site has been operating since October, 2000. I will be available to advise the new Leadership Team and help where needed but my health and age dictate that new blood is asked to lead Hands Across the Sea. Thank you all for your help over these many years. Knowledge Network sectionWelcome to a new Country Advisor Peake, Cliff G. ,PDG, cliff@peakeequipment.co.za Zone 10A, South Africa Country Advisor. Please note that some members have registered as both Geographical Advisors and Project Specialists. We encourage all HANDS members to register for as many functions and categories where they are qualified. Registration forms are available in the Web Site Download section. District Web Site Index (See link from Left Column of Home Page) District web sites generally contain a wealth of information about the Humanitarian Aid projects of the district and usually an index to their members who are involved, as well as related links. Other interesting information can also be found on district web sites. As you know, we have been building an Index to link these sites. We started building this resource because the RI Registry of web sites is incomplete and many shown do not connect. We now have identified 379 sites and are still building the index by consolidating the indexes available from ROTI, District 7150 (USA) the RI Registry of Web Sites and Mylinea Search (Belgium). When we have 450 or so links that connect, we will provide direct links from our HANDS web site. In the meantime, we have provided a link to request the partial Index from HANDS. On-Going Projects Index(See Projects Directory Section for Index) There are no new ones this month, but we now have 130 On-Going Projects listed in our Index (OGPI). This Index supplements the RI WCS Projects Exchange listing as those projects are usually single projects whereas we only list projects in the OGPI that are "packaged" and/or recurring. If you have such a project that is not listed, see the criteria for listing in item 3) of the Projects Directory section of the web site. Potential Partners Index (PPI)(Index Linked from Home Page) There are now 431 Potential Partners with Web Addresses linked from our web site. Here are the new onesSelf Help for Hard of Hearing People (SHHH) Unite for Sight U. S. AID Translation Services(Linked from Left Column of Home Page) We have added a link to the Alta Vista Babel Fish Translation Service near the bottom of the left column of links. This translation provides translation of English to 12 other languages and translations from many languages to English. It is quite comprehensive and the translations are quite understandable and accurate. Success Stories(Section Linked from Left Column of Home Page) There are no new Success Stories this month. Please submit a Success Story if you have one that is worthy of notice. See the Success Story section of web site for instructions.
